You won’t find bustling attractions in Nivelles, but it remains a prominent economic centre none the less. It is a place largely ignored by tourists, which in many ways is part of its charm. With a population of around 23,000 people, it still manages to offer a great mix of amenities for everyday life, including a variety of local shops, cafes, restaurants and patisseries.

For those looking for greater job opportunities, transport links and a much wider range of attractions, Nivelles is conveniently located just 40km south of Brussels, and around 40km north of Charleroi.
 

Location and transport

Nivelles enjoys a strategic location in the heart of Belgium, making for convenient travel to other centres and on to surrounding European countries.

Travel by car and you can reach Brussels in just 40 minutes via the E19, or the city of Charleroi in a similar timeframe via the E420.

For local travel, you’ll find convenient bus services that will get you to where you need to be. Meanwhile, Nivelles Railway Station is served by a variety of Intercity and Brussels RER services, offering convenient travel on to Brussels, Charleroi, Mechelen, Waterloo and Antwerp.

For travel further afield, Brussels Airport can be reached in around 45 minutes and offers regular flights to many worldwide destinations. It is served by airlines including Brussels Airlines, Emirates, Qatar Airways, British Airways, United Airlines and Air France, to name but a few.
 

Living in Nivelles

You’ll find a wide range of apartments and houses located in and around Nivelles, with some of the most popular neighbourhoods including Saint-Barbe, Mont St Roch and Sotriamont.

Prices are relatively affordable, with a modern 1-bedroom apartment being seen on the market for as little as €160,000. You might typically expect to pay upwards of €350,000 for a larger 3 or 4-bedroom property.

Meanwhile, the Municipal Museum of Nivelles is a small museum offering an insight into the history of the city. Each year, there’s also the Carnival of Nivelles, when the streets become adorned with floats, folk groups and brass bands.

For some peace and relaxation, there’s the Dodaine Park Nijvel, which is the perfect place for a casual walk and offers a pool, kids playground and nearby sports facilities.

For an even wider range of career opportunities, look further afield to Brussels or Charleroi, with the former being the home of the European Union and providing fantastic opportunities in fields spanning politics to business and international affairs.

In terms of education, Nivelles has a number of good schools, including the Athénée Royal de Nivelles, which caters for students from 2.5 to 18 years old.
